Job Description

Reporting to the Secondary Principal and working alongside the wider senior leadership team, the Head of Secondary English & Social Studies will drive curriculum quality and student achievement across the secondary years. Core responsibilities span two distinct but complementary areas:

Secondary English

  • Lead curriculum planning, assessment, moderation, and academic standards across all Secondary English levels.
  • Demonstrate deep expertise in the Cambridge IGCSE English curriculum, covering both First Language English (FLE) and English as a Second Language (ESL) pathways.
  • Ensure coherent progression across English pathways, supporting students as they transition between ESL, FLE, and mainstream English classes.
  • Implement and champion effective English as an Additional Language (EAL) strategies to give all learners access to the curriculum while maintaining high academic expectations.
  • Coach and mentor teachers through structured lesson observation, professional dialogue, and ongoing feedback.
  • Monitor student progress, draw on assessment data to inform teaching, and design timely interventions where needed.

Lower Secondary Social Studies

  • Oversee the Lower Secondary History and Geography programme, ensuring a coherent humanities experience that builds literacy, analytical thinking, and global awareness.
  • Collaborate with the curriculum leadership team to review and refine the programme in line with Cambridge requirements and school expectations.

Whole-School Leadership

  • Contribute actively to CIS accreditation processes, ensuring subject-level documentation and practice align with accreditation standards and the school’s continuous improvement agenda.
  • Uphold and promote safeguarding practices across the department, ensuring student wellbeing is central to all teaching and learning decisions.
  • Engage constructively with parents on matters relating to curriculum, assessment, and individual student progress.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s Degree in English, Education, or a closely related field (essential); a Master’s Degree is preferred.
  • A recognised teaching qualification such as QTS, PGCE, or equivalent.
  • At least 3 years of experience teaching Secondary English, ideally within an international or Cambridge-aligned school.
  • Strong working knowledge of Cambridge IGCSE English First Language and English as a Second Language.
  • Proven experience teaching and supporting students with EAL in a secondary context.
  • Prior Head of Department or equivalent leadership experience is highly desirable.
  • Familiarity with curriculum development processes and international accreditation frameworks; CIS experience is an advantage.
  • A clear and demonstrable commitment to safeguarding and student wellbeing.
  • Excellent communication, leadership, and organisational skills.
