Job Description
The primary focus of this role is teaching Design within the International Baccalaureate Middle Years Programme (MYP), with scope to extend into teaching Design at the Diploma Programme (DP) level depending on the successful candidate’s experience, qualifications and interests.
Design at Malvern College Tokyo is a dynamic and forward-thinking discipline that cultivates creative, technically capable and socially responsible problem-solvers. Pupils are guided to investigate authentic, real-world challenges, develop imaginative and iterative solutions, and articulate their thinking through structured design processes. The department champions purposeful innovation and inquiry-led learning as core pillars of the student experience.
Beyond classroom delivery, the postholder is expected to:
- Support both MYP and DP pupils with flexibility as the school’s needs evolve
- Contribute actively to the school’s co-curricular programme, sharing skills and interests beyond the core timetable
- Fulfil a pastoral role, supporting pupils’ personal development and wellbeing as a form tutor or in an equivalent capacity
- Engage fully in the wider school community, including events, professional development and collaborative planning
Requirements
- A recognised teaching qualification and relevant subject expertise in Design or a closely related field
- Experience teaching within the IB Middle Years Programme; DP Design experience is a distinct advantage
- Strong understanding of design thinking, iterative processes and inquiry-based pedagogy
- Enthusiasm for co-curricular involvement and pastoral responsibilities
- A commitment to safeguarding and the welfare of children and young people — candidates must be prepared to undergo appropriate pre-employment and child protection screening checks
- Willingness to have references taken up prior to interview
Benefits
- Contract type: Full-time, fixed-term — January 2027 to July 2028 (1.5-year initial contract to align with the school’s standard August–July academic cycle; subsequent contracts typically follow a standard 2-year cycle)
- Membership of the Malvern College International family, a globally recognised group of premium independent schools
- Access to professional development within a collaborative international teaching community
- A stimulating, student-centred work environment in one of the world’s most vibrant cities
