If you overstay your visa in Vietnam, don’t worry — you still have two options: pay the fine and extend your visa, or exit the country. However, before leaving Vietnam or applying for a new visa, you must complete the fine payment process at the Immigration Department.
What Happens If You Overstay?
The fine depends on how long you’ve overstayed:
- 1–2 days: Pay approximately $23/day directly at the airport upon departure.
- Under 15 days: Fine from 500,000–2,000,000 VND (at the Immigration Department).
- Over 16 days: Fine from 3,000,000–5,000,000 VND. ((at the Immigration Department).
- Fake documents: Fine up to 10,000,000 VND, possible deportation or entry ban.
In minor cases, you can extend your visa after paying the fine, and more serious violations may lead to blacklisting or deportation.
How to Pay Your Overstay Fine in Vietnam
If your visa has expired, you cannot leave the country freely until you pay the administrative fine.
Step 1: Go to the Immigration Department
Visit the Immigration Department in your city or the nearby province. Officers will guide you through the penalty process.
Step 2: Receive Fine Notification
You’ll be informed of the exact fine based on the number of days you overstayed.
Step 3: Pay the Fine
Follow the payment instructions provided by the authorities.
Step 4: Get Your Receipt
After payment, you’ll receive an official receipt confirming your fine has been settled. Keep this document — it’s proof you’ve completed the legal procedure.

- Or visit the Immigration Office in your current province or city.
